Light and something else stabbed at his eyeballs as he attempted to open his eyes.

“What the fuck?”

Those three words pounded in his ears even though they’d only come out of his throat in a whisper. He coughed, then grimaced as the action burned his throat.

He rubbed his face, moaning as pain exploded in his head. He blinked at the sight of the blood on his hands, and in a rush…he remembered.

“Am I dead?”

And if he wasn’t, where the hell was he? He certainly wasn’t in his car.

Finding a clean area of his shirt, Phillip wiped the blood, sweat, and dirt from his eyes. After a few moments, he was able to see more clearly, and he surveyed his surroundings.

“Where am I? Where’s the road?”

An uneasy feeling that he’d taken the wrong turn down the yellow brick road filled his thoughts. Pushing himself off the ground, Phillip wobbled, unsteady on his feet. “Where’s my car?” Yet another question that needed to be answered.

Having taken this trip many times, he was aware of most of the area. This, however, was somewhere he had no recollection of nor any idea how he could have arrived.

And where was his stuff?

He walked a few feet to more level ground and surveyed the area. He still had no knowledge of where he was or how he’d arrived there. No other cars were on the road. Maybe the storm had blown them all away? He was past knowing anything.

Coughing one last time, Phillip placed both hands on his hips and gazed once more in all directions as he pondered what to do next.

Off in the direction he believed he had been traveling were tall mountains and what appeared to be some trees. In the other direction was nothing but plants, creosote bushes, and a shitload of vast nothingness.

Phillip spat a small amount of blood from his mouth and started walking toward the mountains. With no water, food, or transportation, and without even knowing what time it was, the trip wasn’t going to be easy. Hell, even the map he’d just purchased was gone. Where could it be?

“No good to anyone just standing here wondering what’s going on.” The sooner he started, he knew, the sooner he would get some type of answers, or at least more possibilities for shelter.

An hour later, Phillip’s exposed skin was glowing pink, and he pulled up the collar on his shirt to offer some protection.

No birds, no cars, not even an annoying lizard could be seen. His shirt had the beginnings of a salt ring, and his eyes burned as the sweat dripped off his brow. His stench alone should have gathered the attention of some vultures.

“When I get out of this, I’m joining a damn gym,” he grumbled, the words as dry as his tongue.

His legs threatened to cramp, and he pushed on his thighs with every step up the never-ending hills, his eyes on the ground so he didn’t trip or turn an ankle. When his lungs began to burn with every breath, he allowed himself to stop.
